#39. Siri 2.0: The Digital Assistant We've Always Dreamed of.
While we may need this, should we really want it?
1. Introduction - The Opportunity
This post was written in June but was pre-emoted. Curious what the new Apple AI ChatGPT phone will offer? For starters, free ChatGPT. I still consider my iPhone 11 Max fairly new. Paid a bit over a grand cash. I use it more as a camera than a phone. I’ve always told my son it needs to be different. A step forward before I will replace it.
I believe this might be it. What with the chaos, long lines, and wannabe “influencers” that need things new and now, I might wait for 2nd generation AI. Of course thy’ll all want that too.
The big win here is the Siri we’ve always wanted. A true digital assistant that responds to natural language. No more memorizing codes both Siri and Alexa-specific to get information without stopping life to get it. This is huge.
Elon Musk is pushing back on ChatGPT and iPhone OS integration, reportedly banning them from his companies.
2. Introduction - The Dark Side
Well, calling at the Darkside is a bit melodramatic. I challenged myself to come up with three bad things that will result I came up with two.
A. This whole virtual girlfriend / boyfriend / friendfriend that's “Huge in Japan.“
Perhaps we’ll be side-loading apps that highjack Siri as a much more intrusive friend -involved in life decisions from dinner reservations, to career and marriage counseling. It could get a bit weird down the road. Another barrier between human to human communication that makes the future seem less … human.
B. “Have my GPT get with yours.”
They can check schedules and set meetings with colleagues. But why stop there? Have your Chat’s discuss and work out the options. Perhaps agree on series of options and next steps. Assumes GPT’s are trained to focus on differeing points-of-view.
But why stop there? Feeling lucky? Have them make final agreements and impliment.
C. Over-reliance on AI assistance.
Users might become too dependent on AI, potentially diminishing problem-solving skills. The dumbing down of a species. God forbid the power goes out.
All of that said, I’m still looking forward to what this phone experience will offer. And with that said …
3. The New Capes
Here it is for people who enjoy a fine list.
A. Enhanced Siri with Natural Language Understanding
Contextual references are powerful. Less focus of keywords. More focus on what you want.
Talk naturally to Siri and it will understand contextual meaning
Recognizes references to people (e.g. "your daughter") and locations (e.g. "your office")
New glowing screen indicator when activated
B. ChatGPT Integration
With an Alexa in my family room, I’m always yelling requests (How tall/short is “Little Napoleon” Vladimir Putin?) I’ll go with Siri and Chat assuming info is somewhat current - my greatest concern.
Access ChatGPT directly from Siri to ask questions
Get suggestions by sharing photos with ChatGPT
Create images and text content within documents using ChatGPT
C. AI-Powered File and Document Assistance
How about porting Siri 2.0 over to MacOS?
Ask questions about files, documents, photos, podcasts etc.
Siri can find specific files like "a document sent by a colleague last week"
Identify people in photos with AI facial recognition
D. Intelligent Form Filling
Please and thank you.
Siri can find and auto-fill personal info from documents like driver's licenses
E. On-Screen AI Assistance
While I prefer to edit with Apple Silicon, I could learn to like this on a phone. All of the great filter apps started there, right?
Give commands for Siri to edit photos, make them "pop"
Ask Siri to find specific photos, like "photos of you in a green jacket"
Summarize documents and email summaries to colleagues
F. AI Writing Assistance (Mac)
MacOS would be great. Will documents become more interesting to read?
Generate new text content with AI
Proofreading and editing assistance
Tone adjustment for written content
G. Background Object/Person Removal
Remove unwanted objects or people from image backgrounds using AI
H. Feature Discovery
In-app? This will be brilliant.
Describe what you want to do, and Siri guides you through relevant features
I. Emoji Generation (Genmoji)
I’ll Pass.
Generate custom emojis in seconds
Create emojis based on yourself or friends
J. On-Device Image Generation (Playground)
Assuming DALL-E with high-res imagery.
Generate AI images on the device to share across apps
K. Sketch to Image Conversion (Image Wand)
This would be amazing - especially if it ports over to iPad with stylus.
Convert rough sketches into high-quality images with AI
L. Call Transcription and Summarization
Sell your Otter stock.
Transcribe calls with AI
Generate summaries to share across apps/emails

Your Dark Side #2 is haunting, though I don't see C as too much of a consequence (yet). I mean how many times have you been in a social situation where someone asks a question no one knows the answer to and an awkward silence comes about... then, someone suggests that every one has a magical portal to the answers in their pocket/purse?
